Helping Home Buyers and Home Sellers in Edinburgh Indiana, Bartholomew County.

Buying a Home In Edinburgh Indiana

With so many bank-owned homes on the market, some home buyers are wondering about the differences between buying bank owned vs. a regular Ediburgh Indianahome.  And why wouldn't a buyer be tempted to buy a bank-owned home? The prices are attractive, plus, buyers are constantly hearing that banks are desperate to give away homes. One of the problems with this is banks aren't desperate to dump inventory, not on the open market, anyway. To presume that banks will do anything to get rid of a home is magical thinking. Moreover, buyers who aren't careful or don't know what they are doing can find themselves in over their heads

Edinburgh, Indiana was the first settlement in Johnson County and is situated in the far southeast corner of the county.  Edinburgh Indiana’s first settler was John Campbell who came into the area in 1820.

The original plat of Edinburgh Indiana in 1822 contained 32 lots and was owned by Alexander Thompson and Lewis Bishop.

Edinburgh Indiana RiverIt is not certain where Edinburgh Indiana got its name.  Some early accounts say Alexander Thompson was a Scotsman by birth and the town was named in honor of his native land, Edinburgh, Scotland.   However, other documents suggest Thompson was born in Virginia and was of Scotch-Irish descent.  In another account, Edinburgh Indiana was described by the early settlers as “Eden” because of its beauty.  The naming of Edinburgh Indiana remains unsure.

The name originally ended in "h" when it was first platted and when the town was incorporated in 1853.  The "h" was dropped from the name in 1899 and was missing for the next 77 years.  In 1977 the Town Council restored the "h" to Edinburgh Indiana's name.
