High Schools
Columbus East is a public comprehensive four-year high school with 1,535 students and 95 certified staff members. It is fully accredited by the State of Indiana Department of Education.
More than 80% of the professional staff holds at least master’s degrees, and all administrators, counselors and teachers are certified in their respective service areas.
Since opening in 1972, the school’s curriculum and schedule have been modified and revised to mix the best features of flexible modular scheduling with a more traditional structure. The unique program features large group/small group instruction, independent study, resource centers, unscheduled time and school-to-work opportunities.
Ten AP courses are offered within the Math, Science, and Social Studies Departments. Students may enroll in various college/high school courses for dual credit both on and off campus.
Students choose from more than 200 course offerings in 13 departments. The typical CEHS student carries six courses but may enroll in more, given an eight-period instructional day and independent study for advanced students.
Our State test scores in math and English, called the ISTEP+ GQE, showed that our performance as a school really has no peers. When you look at comparable schools around the State of Indiana and factor in similar demographics, we consistently outperform those schools year in and year out. Our academic competition teams perform at the highest level. Whether it is winning the stake Stock Market competition or presenting a classroom project you will get quality with every product.
In the extra curricular arena, we have had an absolutely unbelievable year. In the fall, we had seven out of eight Indiana High School Athletic Association’s recognized sports compete at the semi-state level. Four teams competed in the final four or better. This past winter we had four of the six winter sports teams compete at the State level, with our gymnastics team finishing as State runner-up in an impressive year that saw the school record for that team fall several times. We look forward to competing in the spring, because that is exactly what we do…. COMPETE.
Whether it is in the classroom or in the athletic arena, we expect to do our very best each and every time we open a book, step onto the field, court, or mat. Our toughest opponent is ourselves and we are determined to rise a little higher, be a little better, and stand a little taller.
