Relocating Your Pets
Beloved pets who are members of the family deserve special consideration during a move. Like people, some pets will adjust to new surroundings fairly quickly; others won’t. Many animals do not respond readily to changes in their routines and can be confused by new surroundings.
Here are some tips to ease the move on traumatized pets – and pet owners:
- Before moving, ask your veterinarian about how to handle animal travel and adjustments to the new home. While you're there, be sure to get copies of all vet and vaccination records to take with you.
- Plan ahead to reserve pet-friendly hotels en route if your relocation journey will require an overnight stay.
- Make sure your pets have identification with a cell phone number and address of the new home.
- Once you arrive, set up your pet’s bed and feeding areas right away.
- Re-establish routines for your pet quickly.
- Keep animals indoors or on leash until they become comfortable with their new surroundings.
- Be generous with attention and affection until signs of stress go away.
